Jon Ossoff wins Georgia as Mike Collins fails the center
By Daniel Okafor · Reporting from New York ·
Jon Ossoff defeated Republican Mike Collins to keep his Georgia Senate seat, proving that Trump's endorsement cannot overcome a candidate's personal baggage and extreme rhetoric.
Jon Ossoff won his Senate seat back because the Republican Party nominated a candidate who cannot win a general election. Mike Collins lost because he was the wrong choice for a purple state, not because Georgia turned blue. He brought extreme rhetoric and personal baggage to a race where the center holds power.
A win against the map
The Associated Press called the race for the incumbent Democrat. Jon Ossoff is 39 years old. He secured a second six-year term in a state that Donald Trump won in 2024. This result shows that a Trump endorsement cannot protect a candidate from his own flaws.
This victory shares the same mechanism as the 2021 United States Senate elections in Georgia. In that race, a Democratic candidate won a Senate seat by leveraging a shifting set of voters despite a political climate that often favors Republicans. Georgia voted reliably red for decades. For this pattern to break, the Republican Party had to nominate candidates who alienated suburban voters.
Personal baggage costs the GOP
Mike Collins won his primary runoff with 55.5% of the vote. He had the endorsement of Donald Trump. He also brought the baggage of a candidate who shot a voting machine in a campaign ad.
NPR reported that Collins has ties to family and former staffers who espoused white nationalist and antisemitic views. In November 2025, the House Ethics Committee reviewed a complaint regarding Collins and his chief of staff, Brandon Phillips. The review concerned the hiring of Phillips' girlfriend for an internship where she did little or no work.
The strongest case for Mike Collins rests on the 2024 map. Donald Trump won Georgia in that race. A candidate with Trump's full endorsement should have won in a state that voted for the president. But the map does not erase the man. Collins brought ties to white nationalists and antisemitic views into a statewide race. He chose loyalty to a failed president over the needs of the general electorate.
What drove voters to the polls?
Voters did not go to the polls to debate election fraud. Exit polls reported by the BBC show affordability was the top issue for the electorate. Ossoff made the rising cost of living his central campaign theme while Collins blamed former President Joe Biden.
The facts on the ground told a different story. Collins voted to support Trump's tariffs. The BBC noted that these tariffs have been linked to rising inflation. Voters saw a candidate who supported policies that made their groceries more expensive.
This outcome echoes the 2022 United States Senate elections in Georgia. In that race, Raphael Warnock held his seat in a runoff election in a red-leaning state. He showed that a disciplined Democrat can defeat a flawed opponent.
Republicans targeted this seat but lost their nerve. PBS reported that Republican groups supporting Mike Collins reduced spending in mid-October. They diverted resources to other contests because they saw the collapse coming.
The stakes were high for the national map. Before the vote, Republicans held a 53-47 majority in the Senate. Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to regain control. This effort recalls the 2006 United States Senate elections. In that era, Democrats won a net gain of seats to regain control of the Senate.
Mike Collins is a liability. He treats a campaign like a grievance rally and a staff office like a family business. The Georgia GOP failed because it confused primary enthusiasm with general viability. If the party continues to prioritize Trump-backed loyalists who alienate the center, they will continue to lose seats in the states that matter.
