Feds stage vote fraud theater to break California ballots

By Alma Cordero · Reporting from El Paso ·

The Trump administration weaponizes bad data and theatrical arrests to disenfranchise California voters, proving that policing the border now means policing the ballot box.

The curtain goes up on a manufactured crisis

The line has finally moved from the river wire straight into the registrar’s office. For years, the security state built its budgets on the backs of working people. They worked the chile fields of Fabens or stood outside the Levi's plant in Segundo Barrio. Now, the machine needs a new harvest. The Department of Justice is attempting to halt the counting of more than 20,000 mail-in ballots in California. Attorney General Todd Blanche and First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli are leading the push. They demanded through the New York Post that the 9th Circuit force local clerks to set aside votes before citizenship is verified. They dropped a thumb drive with the password written on a Post-it note, as Slate reported. County workers checked a sample of 200 names from the spreadsheet. They found that more than half were not even registered and many were U.S.-born. This is not election administration. This is a shakedown dressed up as a subpoena.

Dragging a grandfather for the cameras

We have watched this performance before. Operation Blockade parked patrol trucks bumper-to-bumper along the Rio Grande. The Zero Tolerance Policy tore families apart for political leverage. Operation Wetback under Eisenhower used military-style sweeps to deport Mexican immigrants. That dragnet caught citizens and legal residents, too. Today's operation relies on flawed lists and performative force to terrorize communities. The mechanism is identical. Build a scarecrow out of bad data. Set it on fire for the cameras. Use the smoke to justify stripping people of their voice. When HSI LA ran Operation Protect the Vote, they weren't securing an election. They were staging a spectacle.

Let us talk about what happens when this policy lands on a human being instead of a press release. Omar Muñoz is a lawful permanent resident who survived surgeries and severe bone disease. Federal agents dragged him out of his home in his pyjamas in a pre-dawn tactical raid. The Guardian reported that federal agents paraded him in handcuffs for an alleged voter registration violation. They turned an elderly grandfather into a prop for a Department of Justice social media reel. Bill Essayli and Donald Trump needed a villain for the midterm cycle. They manufactured one out of a frail man. He has lived quietly on this side of the line for decades.

The real target is your right to vote

The cruelty is the point, but the sloppiness is the giveaway. In Orange County, registrar Bob Page received a hand-delivered letter from federal prosecutors demanding the citizenship verification of 1,754 people. Registrars in Inyo and Mendocino counties discovered that the federal lists were flat-out wrong. The lists contained names of people who had never even been issued ballots. Yet Essayli writes letters threatening local clerks like Hugh Nguyen. He threatens federal felony charges for aiding and abetting a crime if they dare tabulate a vote. This is the exact playbook of Operation Streamline, turning the legal system into an assembly line of intimidation. Justin Levitt told The Guardian that the government wants the circus because they like the circus. It debases the Department of Justice, but they do not care as long as the cameras are rolling.

Senator Alex Padilla called out the federal government for trying to interfere in California elections. The government already admitted its data is inaccurate and unreliable. Wendy Weiser of the Brennan Center for Justice noted that this PR campaign leaves lasting damage in its wake. The administration knows its emergency motions will likely fail under constitutional scrutiny. But they do not need a permanent injunction to achieve their goal. They need enough chaos to make election workers second-guess every envelope. They need enough fear to keep working-class families away from drop boxes. And they need enough noise to drown out the fact that millions of people are simply trying to live their lives.

We lived through the plant closings and the security state that followed 9/11. We know that when the powerful cannot win at the ballot box, they try to tear the box down. The border is a place where real people live, work, and raise their children. It is not a movie set for federal prosecutors auditioning for cable news. California election officials must stand firm and protect every legitimate vote. They must refuse to let Washington bullies dictate who belongs in our democracy.
