White House uses Maldonado Soriano to justify DACA cruelty

By Alma Cordero · Reporting from El Paso ·

After Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano attacked an Iwo Jima statue, the White House used the crime to smear all DACA recipients, proving the program is a tool for political cruelty.

Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano is 27 years old. He entered the U.S. in December 1999. On a Wednesday night, Prince William County Police found him. He had a sledgehammer in his hands. He was actively damaging a limestone sculpture of the Iwo Jima flag-raising. By the time the police detained him, he had beheaded one of the Marines.

The damage is extensive. According to CNN and FOX 5 DC, the monument suffered gouges across a helmet and face. A bayonet on another figure was also damaged. Police estimate the repair costs will be hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is a senseless act of vandalism. Que dolor.

But the crime is not where the real cruelty begins. Fox News reports that Maldonado Soriano was once a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The Obama administration granted him that status. The Biden administration extended it in 2024. For years, he lived in the fragile hope that he belonged here.

Then the wind shifted. Maldonado Soriano lost his status in August 2026 because the Trump administration did not renew it. This is the mechanism of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The state grants temporary legal reprieve to children brought here, then weaponizes the sudden withdrawal of that status to create a precarious existence that breaks a person's spirit. Now, approximately 500,000 people live in that same shadow.

The theater of the fence

The White House did not wait for a trial to render its verdict. Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers called him a "criminal illegal alien" whose "dream is over." She claimed the socialist Democrats want "open borders" to flood communities with "dangerous criminal illegal aliens."

This is the old play. The administration takes one man's broken mind or broken life and turns it into a mirror for an entire people. They use a sledgehammer of their own to flatten the nuance of half a million lives. They want you to see the beheaded statue and see a reason to purge the neighborhood.

The most honest argument for the government is simple. The monument is a sacred symbol of American sacrifice. The suspect is an illegal alien who violated the law. The state is merely protecting its values and enforcing its borders.

That argument is a lie. Vandalism is a felony. The law should punish the man who swung the hammer. It should not be used as a pretext to punish the housekeepers, the students, and the parents who have spent decades building this country. Justice is found in a courtroom for an individual, not in a press release that smears a community.

A legacy of collective guilt

The statue was the work of Felix de Weldon. He was a Navy man who spent nine years carving that limestone. He understood the weight of service and the cost of war. He created a tribute to men who stood together in the dirt of a Pacific island.

The current administration does not want unity. It wants a target. They are tracing a line from a broken statue to a policy of mass removal. They are not interested in the man from Stafford, Virginia, except as a prop for the cameras.

We have seen this pattern before. In November 2002, the government created NSEERS. They used a national security crisis to force thousands of men into registration and arbitrary detention. They applied collective guilt to an entire class of residents based on where they were born.

The administration will now use the actions of Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano to accelerate the dismantling of DACA. They will frame every recipient as a potential threat. They will use one man's crime to justify the cruelty of the cages. This is not about a monument. It is about the pleasure of the purge.
