Kamala Harris stumbles in Mississippi as her delivery falters

By Daniel Okafor · Reporting from New York ·

Kamala Harris struggled to deliver a motivational quote at a rally for Scott Colom, revealing a disconnect that undermines her profile as a future presidential candidate.

Kamala Harris cannot land a point. She stood in a high school gym in Columbus, Miss., on Thursday to support Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom. Colom is a state district attorney challenging incumbent Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. Harris tried to offer a motivational quote to the crowd. She said, “You know, I mentor a lot of young people, and I talk to them sometimes and part of the advice I give them is, you know, never let someone else with limited ability to see your capacity be a limitation on your ambition.”

The New York Post reported the crowd gave barely any reaction. Harris paused. She said, “Let me repeat that: Never let anybody else’s, somebody else’s limited ability to see your capacity to be a limitation on your ambition.”

The silence remained.

A failure of delivery

The struggle in the gym points to a larger problem. High-profile female candidates face intense scrutiny of their delivery and public persona. This is the same mechanism that hampered Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. When the delivery falters, the persona becomes the story.

Critics on X noted a shift in her speech. Talk show host Chris Ripa called the delivery "nails on a chalkboard." End Wokeness claimed Harris "unveiled a new accent at a rally in Mississippi."

Harris continued to push the point. She said, “That’s their limitation. That’s not our limitation. That’s their limitation.” She added, “We are not limited in our ambition and desire and ability to see what is possible and what can be.”

The facts of the delivery carry the judgment. A speaker who must repeat a butchered sentence to a silent room is not connecting.

The room does not change the map

The Washington Post reported the rally crowd was "packed." But the size of the room does not change the map. Mississippi has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter.

Harris is using these events to elevate her profile. The Washington Post noted this happens ahead of a potential 2028 presidential run. Newsweek reported Harris told the crowd, "it’s time to turn that anger into action, because that phase is over."

She shouted “Mississippi matters” and “We got 12 days.” The 12 days refer to the upcoming election.

The effort appears misplaced. Donald Trump is scheduling a campaign rally in Corinth to support Cindy Hyde-Smith. Colom admitted people asked him why he invited Harris to the event. Colom said, “You know what I told them, ‘Why not?’”

The answer is that a candidate who cannot master a motivational quote cannot persuade a skeptical state.

A candidate's primary tool is the spoken word. Harris cannot deliver a single sentence without stumbling. She cannot read a room that is already silent. The facts suggest she lacks the rhetorical precision required for the presidency.
