Discord and Shauntai Nickerson enabled the Bend massacre
By Maya Ellison · Reporting from Detroit ·
A 16-year-old killed four people at Silver Rail Elementary after being groomed by extremists on Discord; the platform and the shooter's mother must be held accountable.
The blood on the floor of Silver Rail Elementary is not a random tragedy. It is the result of a calculated failure by a tech giant and a parent. Griffin J. John II, a 16-year-old, walked into a school and murdered children and a teacher. He did not do this in a vacuum. He was groomed by a digital cult and armed by his own mother. Discord provided the playground for hate, and Shauntai Nickerson provided the weapon. Both are responsible for the silence now filling those classrooms.
The cost of digital neglect
The horror is written in the testimony of the survivors. Teacher Becky Drury was shot at close range. She told KPTV that she saw her left hand was almost completely severed. She had to pretend to be dead so the shooter would not kill her.
The victims were barely old enough to read. Student Rhoam Summer was 5. Two other children, ages 8 and 11, were also killed. Teacher Megan Lambert, 25, was murdered.
This is the human cost of "engagement." The FBI is now probing the shooter's link to "764." This is a decentralized online network that the FBI calls a "nihilist violent extremist" group. According to Oregon Public Broadcasting - OPB, the group wants to "sow chaos and facilitate the destruction of society." They glorify mass killers and self-harm.
Discord hosted this rot. This is the same mechanism that drove the Christchurch mosque shootings. In both cases, online radicalization and the glorification of mass killers drove individuals to commit violent acts. Discord’s failure to police its servers mirrors the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal. In that case, a tech giant's systemic neglect of safety protocols led to real-world harm.
Discord claims to have protections in place. Attorney General Dan Rayfield is not buying it. His office sent a civil demand letter to Discord on October 19, 2026. He wants information on teen accounts dating back to 2021. He is right to demand immediate accountability.
The weapon in the house
Radicalization is a spark, but a gun is the fuel. KATU reports that the shooter used a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. That gun was bought by his mother, Shauntai Nickerson.
We are told that Nickerson would have prevented the shooting if she could have. That is a hollow sentiment. The question is why a 16-year-old had access to a lethal weapon in the first place.
This is a pattern of negligence. It reminds me of the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. In that disaster, corporate negligence in safety standards led to a catastrophic loss of life among the vulnerable. When those in power ignore the rules of safety, the cost always lands on the people at the bottom.
The school district claims they practice lockdowns twice a year. Superintendent Steven Cook says they will take a "hard look" at their plans. Lockdowns are not a strategy; they are a surrender. They treat children like targets in a war zone because the adults refuse to stop the flow of guns and hate.
The record of liability
The defense will argue that a 16-year-old is an unpredictable agent. They will say no platform can monitor every chat. This is the same argument used by every negligent corporation since the industrial revolution. It is a lie.
The long record shows that when you build a machine that profits from engagement, you are responsible for what that machine produces. When you buy a shotgun and leave it where a radicalized teen can find it, you are part of the chain of events.
The parents of Rhoam Summer have already hired attorneys. They are investigating the gun purchase and the school's security. This is the only path to justice.
We must move past the idea that these are "isolated incidents." They are the predictable outcomes of a society that protects corporate profits and gun ownership over the lives of children.
Federal prosecutors should bring criminal charges against Discord for enabling the radicalization of minors. The parents of the victims should win wrongful death lawsuits against Shauntai Nickerson and the school district. We must establish a legal standard where providing a weapon to a troubled minor is treated as the crime it is. Until the cost of negligence exceeds the cost of safety, the bodies will keep piling up in our classrooms.
