Shauntai Nickerson's birthday gift murdered children in Bend
By Maya Ellison · Reporting from Detroit ·
Shauntai Nickerson gave her son a shotgun he used to kill students and a teacher, exposing a lethal gap in Oregon law and a failure of parental duty.
Rhoam Summer was 5 years old. His parents, Kelik and Lillian Summer, say he wanted to go to the pumpkin patch. He wanted to learn to ride horses. He wanted to be a bunny for Halloween. Instead, he was killed in a classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School. This was not a random tragedy. It was the result of a choice made by an adult.
A birthday gift of death
Shauntai Nickerson bought a Maverick 88 shotgun in August 2026. She gave the weapon to her son, Griffin J. John II, as a birthday gift. He was 16. CBS News reports she gave it to him for recreational use.
This is the core of the crime. A mother handed a lethal weapon to a teenager. She knew her son had special needs. She had told KTVZ in 2020 that he struggled with remote learning. She wanted him to get help from skilled teachers. Instead, she gave him the means to murder those teachers.
The shooter killed four people and wounded two others. According to KPTV, he fired in a special needs classroom. He killed Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old teacher, along with Rhoam Summer and other children.
The theater of security
The school district claims it was prepared. Superintendent Steven Cook told KATU that the district invested in fencing, door locks, and cameras. He says they practice lockdowns twice a year.
This is security theater. It is a distraction from the real problem. The shooter did not need a key. He simply shot through the glass panes of the double doors.
We have seen this before. Physical barriers fail to protect children when guns are readily accessible. The 2026 Bend elementary school shooting stands as primary evidence of this systemic failure to protect children from lethal weapons provided by guardians.
A ledger of negligence
Oregon law allows a minor to possess a shotgun if a parent consents. This law is a death sentence for children. It treats firearms as toys and parents as the only necessary filter.
The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting also began with a parent providing the weapon. We are reading the same page of a bloody ledger. Each failure is a refusal of the state to prioritize lives over the gun trade.
We have a precedent for accountability. In the shooting of Abby Zwerner, a mother was convicted for her son's access to a gun. Deja Taylor served 3+3/4 years in prison for child neglect and weapons violations. Shauntai Nickerson must face the same reckoning.
The Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office says it is "not clear" if Nickerson will face charges. It should be clear. She bought the gun. She gave it to a child. That child murdered a teacher and three students.
Shauntai Nickerson is responsible for the blood on the floor of Silver Rail Elementary. The Bend-La Pine district is responsible for relying on glass doors and drills while guns flow freely into the hands of children. Justice requires criminal charges for the mother and a total overhaul of Oregon's parental consent laws. Anything less is just waiting for the next birthday gift to turn into a massacre.
