Elon Musk uses Trump Accounts to sell a corporate fantasy
By Maya Ellison · Reporting from Detroit ·
Elon Musk's plan to give SpaceX shares to every child through federal Trump Accounts is a calculated PR stunt that recycles public money to buy political loyalty.
Elon Musk is dangling corporate equity like breadcrumbs to distract us from a heist. He pledged to give one SpaceX share to "every kid in America" next year, as Euronews reports. This is not a gift. It is a marketing campaign for a man who has spent more than $276 million since July 2026 to keep Republicans in power. By funneling these shares through federal "Trump Accounts," Musk is not empowering children. He is using the state to brand the next generation as shareholders in his personal empire.
The breadcrumbs of a billionaire
The spectacle began as a corporate rivalry. Anthropic announced it would commit 5% of its shares to a "Public Benefit Fund." That fund aims to help people whose jobs are erased by artificial intelligence. Musk responded on X with a sneer. He recommended giving shares "directly to the public."
As The Verge reports, these shares will go into "Trump Accounts." These are tax-advantaged investment vehicles created under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act. The White House says over 70 million of these accounts already exist. In October, the government automatically enrolled 60 million children.
Musk is offering a share valued at $146.03. For the 73 million children in the U.S., the total giveaway is worth about $10.7 billion, according to Euronews. It sounds like a windfall. But for a family in Flint, a single share of a volatile tech company is not a safety net. It is a lottery ticket. It does nothing to fix the systemic precarity of working-class life.
Built on the public's dime
We must follow the money upward to see the joke. SpaceX is a $2 trillion company, as Egypt Independent reports. It completed the biggest initial public offering in history in June 2026. It raised $85.7 billion in that move. But SpaceX did not build this value in a vacuum.
The company lives on public subsidies. Federal records show SpaceX holds massive contracts from NASA and the Department of Defense. These awards total billions of taxpayer dollars. The public already paid for the rockets. The public already funded the infrastructure.
Now, Musk is "giving" a tiny piece of that public investment back to the children of the people who funded it. He is treating the Treasury Department like his own personal distribution center. He is using IRC Section 530A and IRS forms 4547 and 8879-TA to turn a federal savings program into a corporate promotional event.
A blueprint for deception
This is the Financial Crisis of 2008 all over again. In 2008, concentrated wealth used state-backed financial vehicles to distribute a facade of prosperity while consolidating power and avoiding accountability. They sold the dream of homeownership through predatory loans. When the bubble burst, the billionaires kept the profits and the workers lost their homes.
Musk is using the same mechanism. He is using a state-backed vehicle to create an illusion of shared wealth. He wants us to feel like "owners" while he retains the actual control. This is the Student Loan Crisis in a new skin. We were promised a brighter future through financial instruments that only served to trap a generation in debt.
It is also the logic of the Flint Water Crisis. In my hometown, bureaucrats used official structures to manage the lives of the vulnerable while they ignored the lead in the pipes. Here, the government automatically signs up children for accounts that tie their financial futures to the whims of one man. It is a bureaucratic shell game.
The cost of the distraction
The timing of this stunt is not accidental. Tech giants are facing a reckoning over AI. Automation is threatening millions of jobs. Musk wants to be the hero of the story instead of the villain who replaces the worker with a bot.
He is offering a share of stock to hide the theft of a livelihood. He is using the "Trump Accounts" to ensure that the children of the working class are emotionally invested in the success of the man who is automating their parents' futures.
This is not about the kids. It is about the leverage. By integrating his corporate equity into federal policy, Musk is cementing a bond between his wealth and the state. He is making the government the guarantor of his corporate image.
The giveaway is a fraud. Justice is not a single share of a rocket company. Justice is a country where a union job buys a house. It is healthcare that does not bankrupt a family. It is a world where billionaires pay the same rate as the hardware store. Musk does not owe the children of America a stock tip. He owes the public the billions in subsidies that built his empire. The only thing this giveaway distributes is a distraction from the concentrated power that is crushing the rest of us.
