Shawn Oliver's OUI crash proves he is unfit for Massachusetts
By Daniel Okafor · Reporting from New York ·
After a rollover crash in New Bedford, Republican candidate Shawn Oliver suspended his campaign, a move that confirms his negligence makes him a liability to the public trust.
Shawn Oliver is wrong to call a multi-car rollover crash a "personal matter." He is a public official and a candidate for the second-highest office in Massachusetts. When a driver hits five parked cars while drunk, the crash is not a private struggle. It is a public danger.
The wreckage on Dartmouth Street
The crash happened around 11:40 p.m. on Saturday. Fox News said the crash occurred on Dartmouth Street in the South End of New Bedford. Oliver’s vehicle overturned after hitting five parked vehicles. Two of those vehicles sustained extensive damage.
Police arrested Oliver after doctors treated him at St. Luke’s Hospital. Officers charged him with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation, and speeding. NBC News said Oliver is 42 years old.
Oliver tried to frame the fallout as a private crisis. He said the election is "too important to be overshadowed by personal matters." He asked that the public respect his family's privacy during a "difficult time." A rollover crash on a city street is not a personal matter. It is a criminal act of negligence.
A running mate becomes a liability
The crash turned Oliver into a political liability. Mike Minogue is the Republican nominee for governor and Oliver's running mate. Minogue said there is "no excuse for driving under the influence." He said Oliver is "lucky to be alive and lucky that no one innocent was hurt."
Minogue publicly called on Oliver to suspend his campaign. He said that if elected, he would ask for Oliver's resignation. Oliver suspended his campaign on Sunday.
Is the crime compatible with public office?
The arrest also damaged Oliver's professional standing. He serves as a New Bedford City Council member and a corrections officer. The Massachusetts Department of Correction placed him on restricted work duty. Scott J. Croteau, a spokesman for the department, said Oliver is assigned to the Massachusetts Treatment Center.
Jon Mitchell is the Democratic mayor of New Bedford. He called the allegations "deeply concerning." Mitchell said the public deserves to hear an explanation of what happened.
This is the same mechanism that ended the career of Bob Menendez. A public official's criminal conviction and subsequent resignation are forced by the incompatibility of their crimes with their public office. Oliver’s choice to drive under the influence is incompatible with his role as a law enforcement officer. It is incompatible with his role as a legislator.
The Massachusetts Republican Party is now in a defensive crouch. Amy Carnevale, the party chair, said the party was awaiting additional information. But the police report provides the information. The facts show a man who ignored the law and endangered his neighbors.
The fallout will not end with a suspended campaign. The Massachusetts Republican ticket will likely face voter attrition in suburban precincts, where the incumbent Democratic administration can question the ticket's internal vetting. Oliver also faces a likely exit from his municipal seat. Local leaders often capitalize on public pressure to remove officials who face OUI charges.
The Massachusetts Department of Correction will likely convert Oliver's restricted duty into formal termination. State agencies fire personnel once police reports confirm property destruction and drunken driving. Oliver thought his crash was a personal matter. The record shows it was professional suicide.
