Metallica Harrison destroyed her family at Great Wolf Lodge
By Daniel Okafor · Reporting from New York ·
Metallica Harrison killed her husband and son at Great Wolf Lodge, committing family annihilation that the resort calls an isolated domestic tragedy.
Metallica Harrison did not fail to build a happy family. She destroyed one. The evidence shows a woman who methodically stabbed her husband and 3-year-old son to death before calling 911 to ask for help killing herself. Harrison is not a victim of a broken dream. She is a murderer who viewed her child and spouse as possessions to be taken along into the dark.
A butcher knife in the Poconos
The end came at 3:13 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 12. Metallica Harrison called the Monroe County Control Center. She told the dispatcher she needed "help dying." She said she was "unable to find a vein in her neck to stab." WGAL reports that Harrison told the dispatcher, "My husband and son are already gone in the bed in the living room."
Police found Charles Harrison and his son on separate mattresses on the floor. Charles had multiple stab wounds to the chest. The son had one. Investigators found a large butcher knife on the bathroom floor and a smaller knife on the sink. Both knives had teal-green handles.
Harrison did not ask for help for her family during the 911 call. She only asked for help with her own suicide. In the ambulance, she told medical personnel she "f----- up" because she "just needed energy and strength." She then asked the medics how deep the vein in her wrist was "for next time."
Family annihilation is a crime of control
This is a case of family annihilation. The mechanism is precise: a family member kills multiple close relatives in quick succession and then attempts suicide. It is a crime of control, not a crime of passion. Harrison told officers she "wanted to be with her husband and son." She claimed she worked hard to be the "best mother" and "best wife."
The defense will argue that Harrison suffered a mental collapse. They will point to her statements about wanting a "happy family" as evidence of a delusional state. But the facts suggest a cold calculation. Harrison told police she was "suicidal, not stupid." She managed a resort stay for weeks. She extended the reservation on Oct. 5. She did not snap; she planned.
Is this an isolated domestic tragedy?
Great Wolf Lodge calls this an "isolated domestic tragedy." NBC News reports the resort is cooperating with law enforcement. This language is a corporate shield.
Great Wolf Lodge is operated under the ownership of private equity firms, including Apollo Global Management. For these owners, the priority is brand valuation. Calling a double homicide "isolated" prevents the public from seeing the resort as a place of danger. It frames the event as a freak accident rather than a failure of oversight.
The family checked into the resort on Sept. 21. Surveillance video shows the couple returning to their room at 11:22 p.m. on Oct. 11. No one else entered the room before the police arrived. The resort provided the room, and Harrison provided the knives.
The Guardian reports that Harrison is charged with two counts of criminal homicide. The facts of the case are plain. She killed a man and a child who trusted her. She then complained to the police that she was too weak to finish the job.
Metallica Harrison is not a tragic figure. She is a woman who murdered her son and husband and then asked for technical advice on how to slice her own wrist. Her claim that she envisioned a happy family since she was a child is a lie. A person who envisions a happy family does not use a butcher knife to end it. She failed at the only task she had left: her own suicide.
