Lonnie Turner kills family and himself in Philadelphia standoff
By Daniel Okafor · Reporting from New York ·
Lonnie Turner shot his mother and sister before barricading a SEPTA bus for twelve hours, ending a domestic tragedy with a public suicide.
A trail of fire and blood
Lonnie Turner killed himself Monday after a long standoff on a public bus. A fire began hours earlier inside a house. Turner followed the pattern of a Crime of Passion. In these cases, a sudden impulse drives a person to commit murder. Turner destroyed the lives of the two people who raised him before he died.
Firefighters reached a house on Williams Avenue in the early morning. They found two women shot in the head inside the burning building, NBC10 Philadelphia said. Firefighters found Sadie Turner, 78, and Gabby Turner in the house. Police linked the fire to the murders immediately. Crews received calls for a shooting at the property at the same time the fire started. Sadie and Gabby died at a hospital.
Turner fled the house and boarded a SEPTA Route 18 bus. Police declared a barricade at the Fox Chase Bus Loop, CBS News said. Turner turned the public vehicle into a fortress.
The community watches the standoff
The standoff lasted until 5 p.m. SWAT teams surrounded the bus while officers used a PA system to talk to Turner. Jennifer Sita, a resident, said the threat extended from a domestic matter into the community. She said the presence of a man with a gun on public transportation unsettled her. Haajah Robinson, a rider, said she felt fear while seeing armed officers.
Julio Rosario owns an MMA academy across from the standoff. He said he heard a quick shot. Turner died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a hospital.
Why did the cycle break?
Family members said Turner recently left jail. He lived in the home where the women died. The Philadelphia Police Department now investigates the link between the house fire and the bus barricade. The standoff reveals how reactive policing fails. A twelve-hour standoff can manage a suspect, but it cannot undo the damage of a morning that began with a house on fire. The city must look toward coordinated mental health and domestic violence teams.
