Trump names Katie Zacharia and trades the law for loyalty

By Adele Rutherford · Reporting from Atlanta ·

President Trump appointed Katie Zacharia as press secretary despite her history of conspiracy posts, a move that replaces professional neutrality with ideological loyalty and threatens the rule of law.

President Donald Trump is wrong to appoint Katie Zacharia as his press secretary. He has not chosen a spokesperson; he has chosen a "devoted fan." By elevating a woman who treats baseless conspiracies as gospel, the President is not merely filling a vacancy. He is signaling that loyalty to the MAGA movement is the only qualification that matters. For a government to function, the people who speak for it must be tethered to a shared reality. Zacharia has spent years untethering herself from that reality.

A record of baseless claims

The record of Katie Zacharia is not a matter of political disagreement. It is a matter of documented fantasy. According to CNN, Zacharia used Truth Social in September 2022 to label John Podesta as "Pedo Podesta." She asked why Fox News did not run a feature on "what a pedophile Podesta is." These posts echo the Pizzagate conspiracy theory. That theory falsely claimed Democrats ran a child sex abuse ring out of a Washington, DC pizzeria. The pizzeria, Comet Ping Pong, does not even have a basement.

The danger of such rhetoric is not theoretical. In December 2016, a man from North Carolina fired shots at Comet Ping Pong while trying to investigate that alleged ring. Zacharia did not stop with Podesta. CNN reports she called "radical left Hollywood elitists" "sick pedo cannibals." She reposted a claim that Democrats "want to mask and rape your children." She even shared a post claiming Joan Rivers died after saying Michelle Obama "had a dick."

In Zacharia's case, the history is not a series of gaffes. It is a commitment to the fringe.

The suspension of the law

More troubling than the conspiracy posts is Zacharia's view of the law. Zacharia is an attorney and a graduate of Pepperdine Caruso School of Law. She knows what the law is. Yet, in June 2025, she posted, "Suspend habeas corpus."

Habeas corpus is the legal protection that allows a person to challenge their detention in court. It is a cornerstone of the Anglo-American legal tradition. Zacharia urged White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller to suspend this protection "for reasons of Invasion." She cited the Constitution’s exception for "Cases of Rebellion or Invasion."

A rule that only works while your people hold power was never a rule. If we accept the suspension of habeas corpus because a loyalist demands it, we accept it for every future administration. It replaces the passive virtue of the law with the cleverness of the partisan.

The mechanism of the state narrative

The appointment of Zacharia completes the mechanism of Pizzagate. That parallel is the translation of baseless, online conspiracy theories into the official state narrative by a high-ranking executive branch official. When a press secretary echoes these claims, they cease to be "theories" and become the voice of the United States government.

ABC News notes that Zacharia served as general counsel of Fix California and on the board of White Rose Resistance. She also served as a communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group. These roles show a career built on the intersection of law and partisan advocacy.

The administration is already moving to protect this new voice. NPR reports that in September 2026, the White House restricted access for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. The Justice Department is now investigating television networks that share pool video. This is not a search for truth. It is the construction of a fortress.

The White House will likely face daily questioning about Zacharia's past. The administration will probably respond by further restricting press access. They will move toward online-only briefings to avoid the friction of a real record. This will not protect the spokesperson. It will only accelerate the spending of the government's legitimacy. When the person tasked with informing the public views the law as a suggestion and conspiracy as a source, the press office is no longer a bridge. It is a wall.
