An Erie grandfather betrayed his family in a calculated massacre
By Daniel Okafor · Reporting from New York ·
A 45-year-old grandfather killed nine relatives in Erie before shooting himself, executing a calculated plan that destroyed the very family he was supposed to protect.
Ten people died in a home in Erie, Pennsylvania. Nine were victims.
The shooter was a grandfather. He committed a total betrayal of the family he was meant to protect. He is the only one responsible for this slaughter.
The gunman was a 45-year-old man.
He used a firearm to erase his own lineage. This was not a random act of violence. It was a calculated massacre.
Police responded to the scene at 4:53 p.m.
A ShotSpotter alert told officers that gunshots rang out on Perry Street. According to CBC News, video evidence showed two distressed women pounding on the door. They sought help from neighbors before the gunman killed them.
Two women died outside. They were 51 and 37.
One was Lora Roberts. The New York Post called her a loving mother of five. She was a family friend. She died on the pavement while the killer remained inside.
A 5-year-old boy died on the first floor. A girl, 1 year and 10 months old, died there too.
These were the shooter's grandchildren. The girl was named Amari’anna. Her father, Juicesiyah Alexander Ezekiel, said she was the most beautiful baby God could have created.
A 24-year-old woman and a 44-year-old woman died on the second floor.
One was Angelina Stone. She was the shooter's daughter.
She was eight months pregnant.
She was due to deliver a son, Kyrie, on Wednesday.
A 19-year-old man and a 21-year-old man died in the stairwell.
They were relatives of the shooter. The house became a trap. The victims had no way out. The shooter ensured that no one survived to tell the story.
The 45-year-old shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He died on the second floor. Police found him after a tactical response. Chief Rick Lorah said the scene was the worst he had ever experienced.
The house fell silent
Police encountered an eerie silence when they arrived. They could not contact anyone inside the home.
SWAT officers breached multiple doors. They used a robot to assess the interior. They deployed drones to see inside.
Sounds of gunfire were reported during the standoff. The city said these sounds were flash-bang devices and chemical munitions. No gunshots were fired after officers reached the scene. All the victims were already dead.
A mechanism of betrayal
The Christmas Eve shooting in Mexico followed a father avenging a son killed in a drive-by shooting. It did not involve a family member turning a home into a slaughterhouse. Here, the person meant to protect the children ended them. This is the betrayal of the domestic bond.
The shooter targeted his own blood. He killed his daughter and his grandchildren. He killed his relatives.
An online fundraiser collected donations for the victims by Sunday. The money helps the survivors lay the dead to rest. The trauma remains. Mayor Daria Devlin said the grief does not end when the headlines fade.
Why did the bond fail?
Chief Rick Lorah has served in law enforcement. He said he had not seen anything like this in his career. He is not sure the city of Erie has ever seen such devastation.
Governor Josh Shapiro has pledged his administration's full support. The state is coordinating trauma support with UPMC Crisis Services and AHN Behavioral Health.
The shooter left no note. He left only bodies.
Police are reviewing cellphone records to find a motive. Officials said mental health issues may be a factor.
The facts suggest a man who decided to destroy everything he touched. He did not snap. He executed a plan.
Governor Josh Shapiro spoke with Mayor Devlin to offer resources. But resources are a reaction. The real story is the silence that existed before the first shot.
Investigators will uncover a history of domestic disputes and mental health crises. This is the pattern of the familicide. The shooter did not act on a whim. He chose to kill the people who trusted him most.
