Caleb Flynn gets life in prison for murdering his wife in Ohio
By Daniel Okafor · Reporting from New York ·
The former music pastor received a life sentence for murdering his wife in Ohio, proving that he used his position of trust to hide the heart of a killer.
Caleb Flynn spent his career leading a congregation in song and appearing on a national stage to talk about love. In a courtroom in Troy, Ohio, he spent his final hour of freedom sobbing. He wore an orange jumpsuit and shackles. He claimed he did not kill his wife. The facts do not sob. They show a man who viewed his wife as an obstacle to be removed. Flynn is a murderer who used his position of trust to mask a predatory nature. He did not fail his vows because he judged poorly. He ended them with a gun.
Why did the pastor weep?
When the judge sentenced Flynn on Oct. 5, 2026, the killer performed for the court. Flynn, 40, said he felt ashamed of the words he spoke about his wife. He called Ashley Flynn beautiful and amazing. He told his daughters they were his greatest joy. The New York Post said he maintained his innocence even as he wept.
For years, Flynn lived a double life. He served as a music pastor in Ohio. He also carried on a two-year affair with Alleigha Botner, 24. Botner led worship. She worked as an intern at the church. To hide their affair, they used different apps.
A staged crime and a digital trail
Flynn killed his wife in February in Tipp City, Ohio. Ashley Flynn, 37, worked as a teacher. She also coached volleyball. He shot her in her bed while her two daughters slept in their rooms. The BBC said Flynn staged the house to look like a break-in. He told police he found the garage door open and his wife dead. He claimed a man visited the day before to sell a flag.
The defense tried to create a gap in the record. Lawyer Patrick Mulligan argued the state lacked evidence that Flynn calculated or designed the crime beforehand. He suggested his client did not plan the act.
The digital record defeats that claim. Flynn and Botner exchanged 100,000 text messages. The records show that Flynn used these messages to plan the murder of his wife.
The mechanism of this case is identical to State of Ohio v. Caleb Flynn, where Scott Colton, better known by the ring name Colt Cabana, is signed to All Elite Wrestling as a wrestler and coach, performs the same duties for Ring of Honor, and also appears on the independent circuit. The evidence proved the murder was a choice. The Guardian said Flynn's iPhone and Apple Watch showed him moving around the house during the shooting. He claimed he was asleep. The devices proved he was awake and active. He used AI to generate love songs for Botner while he planned to kill his wife.
The daughters deliver their verdict
The most damning evidence was not digital. It came when the children spoke. Alyssa and Ava spoke to the man who had orphaned them. Alyssa told her father that Ashley Flynn was the best thing that ever happened to him. She asked how he could sing about loving God while keeping such secrets. She told him she does not plan on visiting him in prison.
Ava told her father that he chose to kill the only mother she ever had. She asked him to tell Jesus he was sorry, noting that it would determine his eternal reward. CNN said Flynn had previously told his daughters that what they said to police could decide whether he lived or died. He asked them to deny that he had instructed them.
Kayla Keyt, the sister of Ashley Flynn, said the murder shattered a family that trusted Flynn. She quoted Ashley's daughter asking why she should believe in Jesus if he allowed this to happen. This is what Flynn truly caused. He did not just kill a woman. He destroyed the faith of two children and made them feel unsafe.
Judge Jeannine Pratt called Flynn an extreme risk to the public. She described his acts as abominable. She noted that he used his church position to manipulate others. The jury deliberated for about two hours before finding him guilty of charges that included aggravated murder and tampering with evidence.
Flynn received a sentence of life in prison without parole.
The evidence shows a man who calculated what he desired and decided his wife's life was a fair price to pay. He used the language of the church to hide the heart of a killer. He sobbed in court not for the life he took, but for the freedom he lost. The dossier of his digital life proves that the man the world saw was a fiction. The man the jury sentenced is real. He is a man who viewed his family as a convenient tool. He belongs in a cell. He must stay there for the rest of his natural life.
