John Collison is right to rebuild Stripe for software agents

As John Collison warns of rising security breaches, his decision to rebuild Stripe for software agents is a necessary step to survive the singularity epoch.

Developers no longer integrate payment systems by hand, Stripe co-founder John Collison said on the podcast "Sourcery with Molly O'Shea." Instead, companies send coding agents. This shift ends the era of human design. Stripe processed $1.9 trillion during 2025. The company must now rebuild its infrastructure for machines. Collison said that 2026 starts the singularity epoch.

The end of human input

Machines do not read manuals the way humans do. Human developers appreciate clean designs and clear guides. Software agents care only about speed. When an agent integrates an API, it can easily select the wrong version if the system lacks strict guardrails. This change forces software companies to alter their internal skills. Stripe grew to its current scale by making it easy for engineers to integrate its tools. Now, it must optimize its code for artificial intelligence.

Legacy systems will fail under attack

This rapid shift will expose weak networks to unprecedented danger. Collison said that the next five years will bring more security breaches than the past five. Attackers adopt new tools faster than defensive teams can secure old networks.

The traditional theory that offense and defense remain in balance does not hold up in the real world. Many firms still run unsupported versions of Windows. Startups enjoy a distinct advantage because they operate simple stacks. They can adopt defensive models within days. Large corporations with old systems will remain vulnerable to automated attacks.

Who wins when agents shop?

Some experts argue that established brands will maintain their grip on consumers through traditional ads. They believe that buyers trust familiar names more than automated tools. This view underestimates the power of convenience.

Consumers hate filling out web forms. When personal agents can renew a driver's license or buy shoes automatically, people will delegate these chores. AI search will become the new hub for commerce. This shift will favor niche brands that maintain excellent reviews online. In the past decade, smart ads on Facebook helped native brands like Temu bypass old retailers. Agentic commerce will reshape the market by surfacing businesses that humans have never heard of.

Stripe is preparing for this world by buying companies that specialize in crypto and flexible billing. Its recent buys of Bridge and Privy bring crypto expertise to the company. Its purchase of Metronome allows businesses to charge customers based on how much AI they use.

The internet is shifting from human-readable pages to machine-executable tasks. Businesses that design their sites only for human eyes will soon find themselves invisible. The future belongs to companies that let agents shop.
