Donald Trump visits Ohio as working families pay for elite greed
By Maya Ellison · Reporting from Detroit ·
As Donald Trump campaigns in Ohio, working families facing soaring bills are ready to reject the corporate politicians who broke the economy.
Flint water crisis The drinking water in Flint was contaminated with lead and bacteria while the statehouse looked away. That system of taking our money, poisoning our streets, and walking away is grinding down Ohio right now. Donald Trump is rolling into Vandalia to rally for his candidates. But the people living through his wreckage are done buying the script. In Montgomery county, Trump barely lost in the twin storms of 2024. Now, a mother of three named Kelly Savage-Radich watches her weekly grocery bill climb by $100. She says what millions are thinking: Trump is a disaster. She voted for her grocery budget to stay stable. Instead, she watches families bear the brunt of economic policies forged in elite boardrooms. This echoes the callous abandonment of the Great Recession. Back then, working-class voters faced the economic fallout while the system's architects remained unpunished. Her daughters are growing up in a country where citizens get shot dead in the street with zero accountability. The men in power are too busy staging photo ops to care. As WLWT and The Guardian report, Trump is rushing across the country because his handpicked loyalists are sweating. They are terrified because working-class voters are looking at their kitchen tables.
The FirstEnergy bill Jon Husted wants you to believe he is fighting for the working man. But his hands are stained with the dirt of the largest corruption scheme in state history. Husted is clinging to an appointed U.S. Senate seat against progressive champion Sherrod Brown. He is dragging Trump to town because his campaign is in freefall. WHIO TV notes that Husted’s camp is shouting about border crises and tax cuts. But Husted spent March 2026 testifying in a federal courtroom for the defense of indicted FirstEnergy executives. FirstEnergy funneled a $1 million dark-money bribe through a nonprofit called Freedom Frontier. The money was earmarked straight for a Husted campaign. Working families skip meals to pay for gas inflated by Trump’s $44bn war on Iran. Meanwhile, Husted runs interference for utility executives who bought Ohio’s legislature. The Republican party holds a supermajority in the statehouse. Yet CNBC can crown Ohio the number one state to do business while real people cannot afford milk. That is not prosperity. That is an extraction economy where billionaires take the cream and leave the working class the bill.
The billionaire playbook Then there is Vivek Ramaswamy, the billionaire running for governor. He thinks he can buy the statehouse the way he bought failed drug patents. Ramaswamy made his $2.3 billion fortune through Roivant Sciences by acquiring failed drugs like intepirdine. The drug crashed 75% in a single day. This wiped out pension funds while leaving him sitting pretty. Now he wants to govern Ohio after co-leading the Department of Government Efficiency. That agency threw federal workers onto the scrap heap. It also left millions of Americans' sensitive Social Security numbers exposed on unsecured servers. A Marist poll found that 56% of registered Ohio voters disapprove of Donald Trump's job as president. That disgust is bleeding directly into the gubernatorial and senate races. Kelly Savage-Radich puts it plainly. She would never vote for Ramaswamy because every time she checks his claims, she finds lies. He insults the work culture of ordinary people while dodging accountability for data breaches. We must not reward him with the keys to the state. We must lock the door.
The final choice The men on the stage in Vandalia represent a bipartisan consensus of corporate theft. They pushed through the $4.5 trillion One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This law showers wealth on the top brackets while squeezing the bottom. They also back endless foreign wars that bleed our communities dry. But the pushback is rising from the grassroots. Voters are tired of being treated like collateral damage in a billionaire's game. As ABC News and Daily Maverick make clear, the national spotlight is fixed on Ohio. The ground is shifting beneath the feet of the machine. Voters are realizing that the politicians who break the economy cannot be trusted to fix it. Flint taught my generation that when the state abandons you, you must build your own rescue squads. In Ohio, that rescue squad is heading straight for the ballot box. On November 3, working people are going to take the ledger of the last decade. They will look at the crashed budgets, the stolen public health, and the soaring grocery tabs. Then they will hand the architects of our misery a historic defeat.
