Tennessee botched Christa Pike's execution with chemical torture
By Josie Calloway · Reporting from Pittsburgh ·
Tennessee corrections officials botched Christa Pike's execution through gross incompetence and leaking poison, proving that state executioners turned the death chamber into a house of chemical torture.
A room with no oxygen and a drug that burns like fire
On Wednesday night, Sept. 30, 2026, the state of Tennessee tried to kill Christa Pike at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution with lethal injections of pentobarbital. It was supposed to be a quiet state killing. Instead, according to an emergency motion filed by her attorneys in Davidson County Chancery Court, it became a two-hour ordeal of gross incompetence. There was no emergency medical oxygen in the execution room. Staff had to run and fetch it from somewhere else. Attorney Randy Spivey counted needles jammed into Pike’s left arm. Her attorneys and witnesses documented that her arms swelled, burned, and blistered. Executioners failed to establish proper IV access. They allowed the drug to leak into her surrounding tissue rather than her veins. Dr. Natalie Azar explained that pentobarbital pooling in the arm causes severe injury. It suppresses breathing without delivering a lethal dose. There is no antidote to reverse it. As reported by NBC News, WZTV, CNN, and Al Jazeera, Pike cried out that her arm felt like it was about to burst open. Today, Pike lies unconscious, intubated, and on a ventilator in critical condition at a Nashville-area hospital while medical staff try to clear the poison from her system.
The same cruel machinery that broke Ohio will break Tennessee
This is not a new kind of cruelty. It is the same systemic rot that defined the execution of Romell Broom in Ohio, where state executioners failed to locate a vein before a reprieve was granted. The shared mechanism is simple. State corrections departments rush to execute human beings while ignoring basic medical realities. They use untrained personnel, hidden protocols, and brute force when needles fail. Just as in Broom’s case, the state of Tennessee treated a medical procedure like plumbing. It ignored warnings about Pike’s small veins and medical conditions, and kept pushing drugs into damaged tissue. The Tennessee Department of Correction defended its actions by claiming it followed protocol, even as its execution team ignored blown veins and administered a second round of poison. Attorney Stephen Ferrell noted the horror was not a fear of dying, but a fear of a prolonged, painful, traumatic death. That fear was fully realized, minus the death. Now Governor Bill Lee has paused executions for the rest of 2026 and ordered an independent review, while Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti admits they need to know what happened. But an independent review cannot undo the chemical burns on Pike’s arms. An apology cannot bring back Colleen Slemmer, the woman Pike murdered in 1995.
The state has no right to bungle murder
The state of Tennessee wants the public to look away from the operating table and focus only on the heinous crime Pike committed three decades ago. That is the oldest trick in the book of capital punishment: use a horrific past to justify a present-day atrocity run by incompetents. But we are a society that purports to operate under laws, not lynchings. Criminologist Deborah Denno noted that executions are supposed to be carried out within reasonable means, free of unnecessary pain and suffering. Instead, the state has turned the death chamber into a house of torture. This happened under TDOC Commissioner Frank Strada, who presided over similarly disastrous, visibly problematic executions in Arizona before moving to Tennessee. When attorneys for the state argued in court that TDOC had no obligation to render life-saving care to a woman dying on its execution table, they said the quiet part out loud. The state does not care about justice, healing, or human dignity. It cares about the body count. The family of Colleen Slemmer, exhausted and forgotten by a state that treated their grief as an afterthought, deserves better than a government that cannot even manage a lethal injection without turning it into a grotesque medical spectacle.
Christa Pike must not face another execution attempt. Her sentence must be commuted to life without parole. Every official who authorized this chemical torture should be held to account.
