Donald Trump brings Albert Speer's architecture to Arlington

By Maya Ellison · Reporting from Detroit ·

Protesters and lawmakers rally against Donald Trump's vanity arch near Arlington National Cemetery as his administration evades preservation laws for executive grandiosity.

Albert Speer's architecture

Albert Speer's architecture lives again in the capital. It is erected not for a foreign empire, but for the vanity of a single man. Donald Trump proposes a 250-foot "triumphal" arch at Memorial Circle. He places a gilded monument to his own ego directly between the National Mall and Arlington National Cemetery. Reporting by NPR and WTOP News details how the project would extend the Lincoln Memorial out to the Potomac River. This breaks the historic alignment between the Lincoln Memorial, Memorial Bridge, and Arlington House. It is Albert Speer's architecture of intimidation and grandiosity. It is transplanted onto American soil where ordinary citizens are told to accept the aesthetic of autocracy.

Dozens of activists, veterans, retirees, and lawmakers gathered at Memorial Circle in Washington, D.C. to protest the plan. They billed the demonstration as "Vets over Vanity." Jon Gundersen is a retired Army veteran, former Foreign Service officer, and Vietnam War veteran suing the Trump administration. He called the project "the wrong monument, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, dedicated to the wrong man." Jon Gundersen added, as reported by NPR, "Anyone I talk to, whether Republican or Democrat, they say it's a waste of money and it's not how you honor vets." The Trump administration is ending a key part of the arch review. It evades preservation law through political appointees who terminated consultation after just two meetings. Charles Birnbaum is head of The Cultural Landscape Foundation and a former employee of the National Park Service. He noted that the administration is forcing the project through and nullifying outside voices. He stated to The Independent, "They seem to be making up the rules as they go along."

The architecture of contempt

Administration officials offered the case for the arch on a Tuesday Zoom call with historic preservation groups. They planned to move forward with the original proposal to "enhance the visitor experience." They claimed it serves "as a visual reminder of the noble sacrifices borne by so many American heroes." This argument collapses against the physical reality of the site. It collapses against the administration's own contradictory justifications. Jon Gundersen noted the obscenity of tourists looking out from the arch at the 24 to 27 funerals happening every day in Arlington. As covered by newrepublic.com, Donald Trump claimed on Truth Social that the structure will double as a "top grade Military Complex/Triumphal Arch." He claimed it will house snipers and drones for "national security purposes." Yet officials with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and the National Park Service are entirely unaware of these plans. The Department of Defense has not heard about them either. Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) exposed the cynical legal strategy behind the pivot. He said, "The real explanation is Trump thinks he's going to lose in court, and maybe if he shouts national security, the Supreme Court will care." This mirrors the playbook of the Border Wall construction, where executive power steamrolled statutory protections under the fiction of emergency.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) voiced the collective fury of military families at the Memorial Circle protest. As documented by ARLnow, she said, "I am pissed that the five-time draft dodging coward of a commander-in-chief sitting over there in the White House dares to dishonor the men and women of this country who have put on her collars and sacrificed and served and now lay at rest in the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery." Barbara Best, a family member of veterans buried at Arlington, offered her own condemnation. She said, "Building an arch would be very disrespectful. And I'm pissed as hell at Trump." Julius D. "JD" Spain Sr. is an Arlington County Board member and Marine Corps combat veteran. He promised direct defiance: "If it is built, if somehow it is built, I will get my chisel and I'll be right over there with everybody tearing it down." Meanwhile, Republican Senator Mike Lee blocked a bipartisan bill introduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) to block federal funding for the arch. This proves once again that congressional enablers will protect executive narcissism over the sanctity of our war dead.

The ballot box as the last defense

Authoritarian overreach in urban planning follows a predictable historical pattern. When executive power captures design, it seeks total spatial domination and relies on compliant majorities to starve opposition. For this time to differ, the public must break that leverage at the ballot box next month. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation will give recommendations to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum by October 7. The National Capital Planning Commission is expected to review the project in early November, right as the midterms arrive. Public Citizen is leading a lawsuit against the Trump administration to block construction. Judicial relief moves slowly while bulldozers loom. Sen. Tammy Duckworth noted that the catastrophe could be halted immediately if the Republican majority grew a backbone. But voters cannot wait for legislators who abdicated their duty. The citizens of Virginia, the veterans of Arlington, and working people face tax dollars being looted for a dictator's foyer. They must carry their fury straight into the November midterms. They must turn out every enabler who traded our sacred grounds for a tyrant's arch.
