Renee Good’s family sues the federal officials who killed her
By Alma Cordero · Reporting from El Paso ·
Twin lawsuits filed in Minnesota federal court expose how a deadly immigration surge targeted citizens and silenced observers, demanding a reckoning for a state-sponsored killing.
A bullet in the morning light
Renee Good had just dropped her six-year-old son off at school. Then she met the state’s arm. It was January 7 in Minneapolis. She sat in her burgundy SUV on a snowy street. ICE agent Jonathan Ross walked up with his face covered. He is a 10-year veteran of the agency. He did not ask for papers. He did not issue a lawful command. He drew his gun and leaned forward. He fired point-blank shots as she steered away.
The killing was not an accident. It was the predictable product of Operation Metro Surge. This sweep poured thousands of armed agents into the Twin Cities. DHS claimed Good "weaponized her vehicle" to run over an officer. That lie collapsed when video hit the public. Ross was standing safely out of the vehicle’s path. He shot through the windshield and then the driver’s side window. DW and The Washington Post report the family has filed lawsuits.
We have seen this script before. The parallel is George Floyd's death. State agents in Minneapolis used lethal force against a civilian. A struggle for accountability followed. The mechanism is identical. An agent applies fatal force in broad daylight. The institution manufactures a fraudulent justification. A grieving community must fight state power to prove what they saw.
The architects of the surge
The lawsuits do not stop at the shooter. One action names the United States for negligence. It cites the suffering of Becca Good and her children. The other suit names Ross and advisor Stephen Miller. It also names Kristi Noem and Tom Homan. CNN reports the suit alleges a planned conspiracy. It targeted Minnesotans of Somali and Hispanic descent. It aimed to silence anyone who documented the campaign.
These architects designed a machine of terror. They turned it loose on civilians. Chief Judge Patrick Schiltz found that ICE violated at least 96 court orders. This proves a lawless disregard for judicial checks. Masked agents rove neighborhoods based on how people look. In this system, violence is not a malfunction. It is the core design.
Operation Warp Speed pushed vaccines past safety checks through top-down mandates. This administration used that same speed to crush constitutional norms. They told agents to force confrontations. They assured them they would face no consequences. Local officials demanded evidence, but the Department of Justice dragged its feet. Meanwhile, right-wing media figures smeared peaceful demonstrators as insurgents.
No child should grow up without a parent
The defendants will run their usual plays. They will file motions to dismiss under the Westfall Act. They will scream for qualified immunity. They want absolute shelter for officials who shed American blood. They will try to bury the truth under procedural armor. They hope the public grows tired and looks away.
We must not look away. Becca Good spoke the truth. She said accountability is the only way to make sure no other family goes through this nightmare. No child should grow up without a parent because an agent played soldier. No soulmate should be stolen by a state-sponsored conspiracy.
Justice for Renee Good requires stripping away immunity. It requires securing full compensatory and punitive damages. It requires criminal charges against Jonathan Ross. The federal government owes a reckoning. It cannot buy its way out with a quiet settlement. The law must answer with teeth, or it is no law at all.
