Pete Hegseth hands future Pentagon strategy to Elon Musk
By Tom Beckwith · Reporting from Washington ·
The institutional interest in outsourcing command Nations have interests, not friendships. A government that rents its intellect to vendors has already lost the peace. Pete Hegseth announced Project Meridian at Marine Corps Base Quantico across a 120-day horizon, reaching from under the Earth to beyond the moon, according to Fox News, CNBC, ABC Color, and Der Spiegel. Hegseth placed this future with Newt Gingrich, Palmer Luckey, and Elon Musk. The Department of Defense calls this creativity. A desk officer calls it a capitulation of the state to the balance sheet. The best forecasters of conflict do not reside inside the Pentagon, Hegseth told officers during his State of the Force address. He cited the obvious biases and risks of asking and answering the questions internally. He is right about the hazard, but wrong about the cure. Inviting vendors to draw the strategic map mistakes salesmanship for doctrine.
The capabilities bought by the balance sheet The capabilities assembled under Project Meridian show what this initiative buys. Musk leads SpaceX, a contractor holding a $97,002,955 Space Force award. Luckey founded Anduril Industries, a military technology company valued at $61 billion that secured major defense contracts. This mimics the state-led mobilization of the Sputnik crisis, where a perceived technological gap triggered a defense reorganization. Starlink's low-Earth orbit satellites created an operational dependency that shifted leverage from the state. Tesla's disruptions forced regulatory compliance in similar fashion. The appointment of Musk and Luckey embeds corporate contractors directly into force structure. China sanctioned Luckey in December 2025 over arms sales to Taiwan. The man charting future warfare domains brings confrontational industrial baggage to Pentagon planning.
The five-year price of captive doctrine We must price every move five years out. Hegseth created Autonomous Warfare Command to scale robotic systems across the joint force. This follows the forced exit or resignation of more than 20 flag officers and civilian leaders since January 2025. The shakeup clears the hallways of inconvenient conflict-of-interest questions. The 120-day report will direct billions toward autonomous systems and commercial space architecture. That report will lock the armed forces into proprietary ecosystems controlled by SpaceX and Anduril. Career bureaucracy will see its knowledge sidelined by contractors reliant on perpetual technological churn. Washington did not buy a technological advantage over rivals. It bought a loop where the contractor writes requirements, wins awards, and bills the taxpayer.
Project Meridian will deliver a 120-day roadmap redirecting defense procurement toward SpaceX and Anduril, cementing dependency under the banner of reform.
