ICE agents bring blood to Austin streets and demand we look away

An ICE agent shot a man in North Austin, exposing a violent pattern of federal enforcement that city leaders and communities must reject.

The horror has come to our city

The violence has arrived on our asphalt, and we are told to call it a routine day at the office. An armed agent working for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement rammed a dark blue Toyota Corolla parked under a North Austin overpass, as reported by The Texas Tribune and News From The States. The agent stepped out of a federal vehicle in the 8000 block of Anderson Square and fired at least five times. The bullets struck an adult man in the upper torso and his back as he sat in his car.

Austin and Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz reported that medical responders received a call shortly before 1 p.m. regarding a man with a single gunshot wound. Witnesses working at a nearby business heard gunshots near Anderson Square and Research Blvd. One witness found the wounded man bleeding inside the vehicle. Dell Seton Medical Center treated the victim, who remained in serious but stable condition by Sunday afternoon. City officials stated they do not know the name or nationality of the man who was shot.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said he is "angry" but "not surprised at all" that an ICE agent shot someone in the city. He noted that immigration operations have picked up in recent weeks. Watson added: "If there's nothing wrong with that, they should welcome an investigation. And if you're pro law enforcement, you should see that an investigation that is done right will only enhance credibility. Austinites should know the truth, and I am pleased that we're in a situation where Austin will also be involved in this investigation." Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated the shooting occurred after a "small foot pursuit."

U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin, wrote on X: "The horror has come to our city: ICE has shot a person in Austin this morning." Casar demanded a full, independent investigation, immediate release of body camera footage, and accountability for any officer who broke the law. Casar supports outside agencies investigating because "ICE has not been truthful in shootings in other cities." He added: "It is appropriate for this community to ask for independence, to ask for transparency, and to ask for accountability. This is a pattern. It's a disturbing pattern, and it's got to stop."

This terror is not accidental. It is the direct harvest sown by the Department of Homeland Security under Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who issued a Notice extending the Finding of Mass Influx of Aliens for another 180 days. Federal records show the agency operating near full detention capacity while expanding arrests nationwide. USAspending records show massive federal outlays fueling this apparatus, including a $27,780,623.73 contract awarded to Dell Federal Systems L.P. and a $9,629,881.93 contract awarded to Vander Weele Group LLC.

A national track record written in blood

The apologists for the security state will tell you that these armed agents are simply enforcing the law. They claim officers face dangerous conditions on our streets and that every use of force is justified by border chaos. ICE records indicate that aliens assaulted or used force against 231 ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers, compared to 10 officers in an earlier period. That is the defense: an agency under siege, lashing out because it must.

The defense collapses the moment you look at the body count. This North Austin shooting is not an isolated aberration; it is a carbon copy of the Lorenzo Salgado Araujo shooting. In that case, a 52-year-old Mexican man was shot and killed by an ICE officer in Houston on July 7 while driving a work crew to a construction site. An ICE officer shot Salgado Araujo while he was driving, leaving three co-workers arrested and a dead man at Ben Taub Hospital.

The pattern stretches across the map. Just six days after the Houston killing, an ICE officer shot 25-year-old Colombian man Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero during a traffic stop in Biddeford, Maine. Outlets including KBTX News 3 reported the shooting. An ICE vehicle rammed Durán Guerrero's car while he circled an intersection incapacitated after agents shot at his car five times. He was struck in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. Those incidents followed the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota during winter enforcement efforts. When federal agents turn municipal streets into free-fire zones, the system does not protect communities; it hunts them.

The truth we carry into the light

We have lived through this long enough to know the script. The Department of Homeland Security will stonewall local investigators, hide behind federal immunity, and refuse to release body-worn camera footage. They did the exact same thing after the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. They will flood our neighborhoods with tactical units funded by tens of millions in federal tech contracts. They operate under an extended emergency declaration that treats every immigrant family as an insurgent force.

When you build a deportation machine that runs on fear and militarized street sweeps, you invite bloodshed into our neighborhoods. You bring violence where our children go to school and our families go to work. Austin police, Texas Rangers, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security plan to investigate this shooting. But an agency cannot investigate its own brutality with clean hands. Austinites must demand full independence and the immediate release of body camera footage. We must demand the prosecution of any federal agent who treats human life as cheap collateral. We will not accept a city where federal gunmen roam our blocks and leave our neighbors bleeding under an overpass.
