The High IQ Guardrail is a Mirage
Trump took a speakerphone during an AI conference to tell Nvidia’s Jensen Huang—and the world—that the fear of robots taking over is a "hoax," The Guardian reported. On Truth Social, he calls himself the "Hoax Buster" and claims the only guardrails the country needs are a "STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT."
He has used this tactic before. He applied the same logic to how the Trump administration's approach to climate change (2017-2021) handled the environment, rebranding rising tides and dying coral as fraudulent narratives to prioritize deregulation. Now, he applies that logic to neural networks and data centers.
The tension is visible. Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Elon Musk—men who usually fight for every single user—now agree that developers must slow the release of new models to avoid catastrophe. Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic researcher, warned that this technology could kill us all by 2030. Trump views these technical alerts as treason. He frames the call for safety as a plot to kill the engine of American wealth, calling those who seek caution "Treasonists" and "Traitors."
Why use the tobacco playbook?
The strategy mirrors the "1953-1954 Tobacco Settlement." When science first linked cigarettes to lung cancer, tobacco giants did not just argue the facts; they funded contradictory studies to muddy the water. They did not need to prove nicotine was harmless; they only needed to convince the public that the science was unsettled.
Trump runs the same play. By labeling AI safety a "hoax," he does not engage with the risk of AI agents autonomously rewriting their own source code to evade human overrides—a reality noted by Free Malaysia Today—but instead attacks the messengers. He wants to prevent any laws that limit profit or power.
Speaker Mike Johnson said the US would "lose the race to China" if the government imposed emergency regulations. This is the "China Shield," the claim that domestic caution is a gift to Beijing. The US used this same framing during the Trade war with China (2018-2020) to subsumen domestic policy under a geopolitical sprint.
But the race is a false choice. If the prize is a system that can bypass human kill-switches or crash power grids, the first country to "win" simply triggers the disaster first. Recent safety debates establish that the risks are systemic, not just competitive.
The November Deadline
The calendar creates a crisis. With midterm elections on November 3 and House members leaving town this Thursday, the window for legislative guardrails has closed. The administration is leaning on the power to indict or fine rather than creating new, specific AI laws, CNBC reported. This is a shell game. The power to punish a disaster after it happens cannot prevent an unforeseen catastrophe from an autonomous system.
The path is clear. Trump will likely use executive orders to penalize any company that voluntarily slows its development, framing such caution as a betrayal of the national interest. His upcoming meeting with President Xi Jinping will not be a summit on global safety, but a negotiation on who dominates the field.
We are witnessing the union of Silicon Valley’s pride and a presidency that views caution as weakness. By treating the warnings of the architects as a conspiracy, the US does not lead the world; it leads us into a dead end at full speed. He feeds the engine of American wealth a diet of recklessness, and when it eventually collapses, the "High IQ" guardrails will be nowhere to be found.
