But beyond the flags and the Secret Service perimeters, the official ceremonies mask a ledger of blood and betrayal.
History books carve 2,977 victims into plaques. That number is manageable. But ABC News and Dawn report a second, more haunting tally: nearly 10,000 people have since died from 9/11-related illnesses, with tens of thousands of certified cancer diagnoses. When Michael Barasch, a lawyer for responders, told ABC News that "9/11 didn't end on 9/11," he was naming a crime. He described the slow-motion massacre of the people who ran into the dust while politicians planned their exits.

The state polished the image of the blast and abandoned the biology of the aftermath.
Ground Zero was an American Chernobyl. When the Twin Towers fell, they choked Lower Manhattan with pulverized concrete, asbestos, and lead. The state used the FDNY, the NYPD, and construction workers as disposable tools. Like the workers in Ukraine, these responders breathed lethal contaminants because officials prioritized the speed of commerce over the lives of the working class. My father spent thirty years on a GM assembly line; he knew the exact moment a company decided a worker's lungs were an acceptable cost of doing business. This was that same calculation, scaled to a national tragedy.
Why was the Mayor sidelined?
These anniversaries project a unity that does not exist. The pattern holds: powerful men gather to signal strength while the victims fade into the background.
This year, the exclusion had a specific face. While Donald Trump stood at the Pentagon, New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani, attended the ceremonies in his own city. City Council member Shahana Hanif called it "concerning" that the mayor faced different treatment because he is Muslim. A government that claims to honor the victims of Al-Qaeda while treating a Democratic Socialist Muslim mayor as a second-class citizen at a state function exposes its own lie. The "unity" these ceremonies sell only covers those who fit the established mold of power.
The Myth of the Safety Net
The state claims the WTC Health Program proves it took responsibility. Officials cite funding and certifications as a moral compass. But providing a clinic for people the government already poisoned is not responsibility—it is triage. If the state had valued these workers, it would not have forced them to breathe caustic dust without respirators in 2001. It would not have spent years ignoring the cancer clusters.
Logan Miller, a 32-year-old attendee, told Dawn that the next generation "can’t fathom what actually transpired." He is right. Students learn a version of 9/11 centered on planes and heroism, not negligence and toxins. They are taught that the government is a protector, rather than the entity that manages the fallout of its own failures.
The state uses the working class as a buffer between itself and disaster. Whether it is the lead pipes in my hometown of Flint or the toxic ash of Lower Manhattan, the costs of recovery always land on the same zip codes. Until the WTC Health Program is treated not as a charity, but as a lifelong debt owed to the people the state betrayed, these ceremonies are just theater. The government failed to prevent the attacks, failed to protect the survivors, and continues to treat the resulting death toll as a footnote to the political pageant.
