# The Energy Poverty Trap

"Net Zero 2050" does not safeguard the environment; instead, it impoverishes humanity on a massive scale. Chris Wright said this on the latest episode of The Free Press podcast, where he argued for a philosophy of "energy abundance." He claims that pursuing net zero costs ten times more than any potential benefit and actively harms the world's most vulnerable people.

Can we survive on less?

Wright argued that energy builds civilizations. When humans began burning coal and oil, average life expectancy more than doubled, climbing from 30 to over 70 years. He sees a stark divide in the modern world: one in eight people live fully energized lives, while the rest do not. To bridge this gap, Wright said we need vastly more power, not less.

The world relies on a few physical essentials: steel beams, concrete slabs, plastic piping, and nitrogen fertilizer. Each requires the white-hot heat of a blast furnace or a chemical plant to produce. Wright noted that the previous Department of Energy focused on wind, solar, and batteries—which provide roughly 3% of total energy—while ignoring the "firm generation" needed to keep the lights on. He pointed to a government grant for "decarb mac and cheese" as a symbol of waste, contrasting it with the need for new power equal to 100 nuclear reactors to support AI and domestic manufacturing.

The High Cost of Green Energy

This transition creates a divide between rhetoric and reality. Wright argued that countries leading the renewable shift, such as Germany, the UK, and Denmark, now pay the highest electricity rates in the world. In the UK, he said the rush toward renewables extinguished the nation's blast furnaces and nearly eliminated its steel production.

Cutting greenhouse gases in the West is often an accounting trick. By shipping factories to coal-reliant regions like China, the UK did not stop emissions; it simply moved them. "The atmosphere doesn't care where the emissions came from," Wright said. He argued that wind and solar cannot run a modern economy because they flicker on and off and require carbon-heavy smelting to manufacture their turbines and panels.

Power is a Moral Necessity

Some argue that the long-term cost of climate catastrophe—flooded coastlines, withered crops, and collapsing ecosystems—outweighs the short-term economic pain of a rapid transition. In this view, relying on hydrocarbons is a death sentence.

Wright countered this by focusing on human mortality rather than atmospheric temperature. Extreme weather deaths have nearly vanished since the 1920s; once claiming half a million lives a year, these disasters now kill fewer than 10,000. Energy-driven infrastructure, such as sea walls and air conditioning, makes humans resilient. Wright called the pledge by a small group of wealthy nations to stop lending for hydrocarbon projects in the developing world "repulsive." One in four people still cook over open fires of wood or dung, which kills millions every year through soot-filled kitchens. Providing propane or natural gas is not an environmental crime, he said, but a necessity that liberates women from the daily labor of gathering fuel.

Humanity climbs a ladder of energy density to solve systemic problems. From wood to coal, then to oil and nuclear, abundance has always been the foundation of peace. We cannot maintain climate-controlled hospitals or refrigerated vaccines while intentionally restricting the most reliable energy sources.

While the world must eventually transition to nuclear, geothermal, and fusion energy, it cannot do so by creating an economy of scarcity. A high-tech, carbon-neutral world cannot be built on a low-energy foundation. Energy poverty kills more certainly and immediately than a two-degree shift in temperature; we must prioritize the living over the model.
