In Tampa Bay, the Tampa Bay Times reports outbreaks appearing for the first time in decades. Pinellas County Mosquito Control is currently battling Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. This summer, the county recorded five cases of dengue fever—an illness that can trigger organ failure or bleeding from the eyes and ears. Jason Stuck and his team are fighting a war against these vectors, but reactive spraying cannot fix a broken system.
How do mosquitoes find us?
Mosquitoes do not find hosts by accident; they use chemistry to navigate. Kaylee Marrero, writing in The Conversation, said the urban-dwelling species targets humans with high levels of Staphylococcus bacteria. Meanwhile, its invasive counterpart tracks ketones like mesityl oxide.
A single fruity scent, ethyl 2-methylbutanoate, attracts all three major regional species. While the state issues vague warnings, the real defense requires managing urban chemistry and standing water in discarded tires or clogged gutters. Florida has missed these cues before, treating the 2013 to 2016 Chikungunya outbreak and the 2016 Zika epidemic as temporary crises rather than permanent ecological shifts.
History repeats in the ports
This pattern echoes the 1853 Yellow Fever epidemic in New Orleans. In that subtropical port, thousands died because the environment became a landing strip for disease. While that tragedy was fueled by a lack of immunity and racial disparities, today’s failure is technical. We possess the data but lack the ability to deploy it.
State agencies currently react to outbreaks rather than hardening the environment. This cycle of reaction mirrors the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, where bureaucracy struggled to process biological data in real-time.
Florida doctors must stop treating dengue as an import and start treating it as a local primary suspect. Unless local mosquito control and state agencies build a permanent, technically-literate infrastructure to manage invasive species and human attractants, the next spike is inevitable. The mosquitoes have adapted to our changing climate; the state’s infrastructure remains stuck in the past.
