The new Syrian government will use these high-profile trials of the 18 detained officials to permanently sever its ties to the dark decades of the Ba'ath Party, much like the Libyan chemical weapons destruction era that proved a new regime must break entirely with its predecessor's WMD sins to gain diplomatic air.
When Ambassador Olabi warns that they cannot safeguard regional security while exposed to unprovoked attacks that breach international conventions, he is speaking a hard truth that Western capitals prefer to mute. Syria is doing the global community a massive service by unearthing every last drop of al-Assad’s poison, securing its territory, and bringing the architects of mass murder to justice. The international community’s job is to back them up, pressure the saboteurs to stand down, and ensure that the dawn of a post-Assad Syria isn't buried under foreign bombs before the smoke can even clear.
