DNB moves gold to London as a vote of no confidence in the US

When you’ve spent your life balancing a ledger or flying a C-130, you learn one immutable truth: hope is not a strategy. You don't assume the runway is clear; you verify it.
# The Dutch are Moving Their Gold
When you balance a ledger or fly a C-130, you learn that verification beats hope. You do not assume the runway is clear; you check it. You do not assume the cargo is secure; you strap it down. The Dutch central bank (DNB) is now strapping down its reserves. While diplomats call this "diversification," it is a practical hedge against the reliability of the American vault.
The Dutch are Strapping Down Their Cargo
The movements in the Netherlands are more than bookkeeping; they are a signal. According to NOS and Euronews, the DNB moved 86 tonnes of gold—roughly the weight of a Boeing 737—out of the United States and Canada and into London.
| Location | Previous Share | Current Share | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | New York | 31% | 19% | | Ottawa | 20% | 19% | | London | 18% | 32% |
Olaf Sleijpen, the President of the DNB, did not use vague language. He said trade wars and border skirmishes drove the move, noting the bank must strengthen its ability to move gold without a US court order. He admitted that while the bank hopes it never needs to deploy the gold, the metal must remain "deployable." The Dutch believe the US has become a risky neighborhood; they want their assets where they can reach them without asking permission from a desk in Washington.
The bank used a mix of physical transport—hauling over 27 tonnes through Zeist in armored convoys—and tactical trading. Rather than shipping every bar, they sold gold in New York and bought equivalent amounts in London to spread the risk. This is the behavior of a manager who sees the wind shifting and moves the livestock to higher ground before the flood hits.
Why the Vault Became a Cage?
The Dutch are reading the record. The "safe haven" of the US Treasury and the Federal Reserve has evolved into a political weapon. The blueprint appeared in 2011 when the US froze Libyan assets during the civil war. The pattern held in 2014 during the Russian annexation of Crimea, forcing nations to rethink where they parked their wealth. The trend peaked in 2022 when the West locked Russian central bank reserves to punish the invasion of Ukraine.
When the US demonstrates that it can turn a vault into a cage with a single pen stroke, every central banker takes note. The DNB told NOS they specifically fear the US could shut down payment traffic in the Netherlands. They do not fear the US stealing their gold; they fear the US making it impossible to use.
This mirrors the frantic repositioning of reserves before the outbreak of World War II. Powers moved critical assets to avoid seizure or immobilization. They knew that once conflict escalated, the rules of international banking would vanish, replaced by raw power. The Dutch treat the current tension between Europe and the US not as a diplomatic spat, but as a precursor to a collapse of the global banking order.
Trust is No Longer the Currency
The DNB explicitly links this move to the return of Donald Trump to the White House. European officials worry about a president who views trade and alliances as a ledger rather than a lecture. They see "America First" as a threat to their stability. The Dutch are reacting to the reality that the US is no longer interested in acting as a free insurance policy for European capitals.
If the Dutch feel their gold in Manhattan is less usable during a crisis, they are right to move it. Markets allocate better than agencies, and the market for trust in the US dollar as the sole global anchor is crashing. The world is returning to a state where resilience means physical possession and geographic proximity.
The US should welcome this. For too long, the US has carried the burden of the world's reserves while Main Street suffered. If European banks want to move their gold to London or Zeist because they fear American resolve, let them. The US does not need to be the world's piggy bank if the world no longer trusts the banker.
The era of blind trust has ended. The Dutch realize that in a world of sanctions and trade wars, the only gold that counts is the gold you can touch. America is finally putting its own interests first, and the rest of the world is scrambling to find a new place to hide its treasure. Let them move every last bar; a stronger America is one that does not rely on the trust of allies who are already looking for the exit.
