Rubin Observatory capturing an image—a stacked view of the COSMOS field—that reportedly contains more than 500,000 galaxies and over 50,000 stars. The camera doing this is called the LSST Camera, a beast with a 3.2-gigapixel resolution, mounted on an 8.4-meter telescope in the Chilean Andes.

The numbers are staggering: half a million galaxies captured by stacking hundreds of exposures. But when I read about this kind of spending, this level of focused global resource deployment, my mind doesn't drift to supernovae. My mind drifts back home, to the county hospital that closed its maternity ward because they couldn't afford upkeep on a single piece of equipment. The quietest patient is usually the sickest, and what I see here isn’t the glow of distant stars; it’s the blinding shine of misplaced priorities.

Mapping the cosmos doesn't mean mapping our needs

The mechanism at play—the methodical, large-scale acquisition of precise data to create a comprehensive model of an entire domain—is familiar ground, and frankly, it smells like old colonial bookkeeping. This isn't new; this is just different scale. The Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, which began in 1802, was a project that aimed to survey the Indian subcontinent with scientific precision. It required immense resources and meticulous labor to create a complete model of an entire territory for centralized power.

The parallel isn't surface level; it’s structural. Both projects are about imposing a totalizing map—whether coordinates or cosmic structure—that assumes knowledge will solve fundamental problems of control and understanding. The sheer dedication to mapping everything out there in space, as described by Bob Blum, Director of Rubin Observatory at NSF NOIRLab, who said "the COSMOS image marks just the beginning," feels less like pure discovery and more like an endless accounting ledger for human curiosity.

Where does all this focus leave us?

While scientists are mapping 20 billion galaxies over a decade, what happens to local infrastructure that keeps people alive right here on Earth? Who pays for rural clinics when the national budget is poured into telescopes in the Andes? The massive capital and human effort required for these deep-field views are pulled taut toward the distant unknown.

We are so easily dazzled by universal knowledge that we forget our immediate, terrestrial needs: keeping insulin affordable, maintaining local hospital beds, ensuring clean water in the zip codes that get the sickest air. This grand scientific endeavor is a powerful distraction. It allows us to feel advanced while ignoring systemic failures right under our noses.

The money poured into observing light that traveled billions of years away is not only diverting resources from the local emergency room; it represents a profound failure of imagination—a refusal to see the infrastructure crisis right outside the window. We are sacrificing the tangible health and stability of our own communities at the altar of abstract, distant curiosity.
